In the world of fashion, a designer can be “totally in” one day…and then “totally out” in another.
The show “Project Runway” features a group of fashion designers competing head-to-head in weekly design challenges—utilizing their creativity, skills and grit. If they prove themselves successfully, they will remain in the competition.
If not, they’ll be deemed “out” and eliminated from the competition. Towards the end of the competition, three designers will present full collections, and then one will be selected as the winner.
For season 20 of “Project Runway,” the season decided to call back previous “Project Runway” contestants to compete.
From this, the 20th season of “Project Runway” is formally known as “Project Runway All Stars.”
If they win, the designer shall be given a $250,000 cash prize, along with some additional gifts.
For this season, fashion designer Christian Siriano serves as a mentor for the other designers. The main judges are: journalist Elaine Welteroth, fashion designer Brandon Maxwell and editor-in-chief of ELLE Magazine, Nina Garcia.
Along with the main judges, there will be a guest judge each week.
The Challenge is Announced — 5:05 p.m. ET
Christian and Nina meet the 14 fashion designers on a rooftop space in New York City.
Shortly after, models come down wearing the previous designers’ works.
The designers looked puzzled and wonder why the models are wearing their designs from the previous seasons.
Christian then announces to the designers that for the design challenge, they need to create a garment that is inspired by their previous look. The previous looks are garments that were ranked low in the previous seasons—or caused the designer to be previously eliminated. Therefore, Christian expects them to do something “new and updated.”
The designers don’t need to use same fabric or exact same silhouette, but their updated design should have the “spirit” of their original design.
Before leaving, Siriano says there’s some kind of twist…but doesn’t elaborate on it, giving a sense of mystery and suspense.
Many of the designers seem anxious or nervous of the challenge.
The designers are given 30 minutes to sketch their designs. They also select model cards (i.e., who they want to model their garment).
After, the designers head over to Mood Fabrics to get the material for their designs. Their budget is $600, and they are given 45 minutes to shop.
The Designers Start Working — 5:10 p.m. ET
The designers go to the workroom and start the design process.
One designer, Kayne, said that he’s missing fabric.
One of the designers discusses incorporating draping into her design.
Multiple designers expressed dissatisfaction with their designs from “back then,” and they want to create something much more elevated.
Laurence, one of the designers said that she “wanted to hide” when she saw her previous design earlier in the day.
Another designer, Mila said that her previous design “brings back memories…that she doesn’t want to revisit.”
One of the designers was kind enough to trade models with another designer. The designer, who is Black, wanted a Black model to capture the essence of her mother.
Day One is Complete. Day Two of Designing Begins. Christian Meets the Designers — 5:15 p.m. ET
The designers head back to their accommodations at Hotel Indigo.
They appear to be in some kind of lounge or cocktail room. Many of them are seen drinking wine, champagne or beer.
The evening passes, and now it’s daytime.
The designers start their second day of designing.
Kara expresses her desire to create a blue-colored gown.
Siriano comes into the design room and checks in with the designers.
He starts chatting with one designer named Brittany, and shares with her that in her previous design, he liked certain elements of her design. For example, he liked how the coat looked “very couture” and he also liked the butterfly details.
After chatting with Brittany, Christian expressed his concerned that her new design might not have enough of her “cool, sporty” aesthetic in her design. Apparently, Brittany was saved from an elimination on her season, by Christian (he said in a playful, mocking way).
Christian Continues to Chat with the Designers — 5:20 p.m. ET
Christian chats with Kara about her design. Christian likes the fabric that she chose. But he asks Kara, “so, what is this fabric going to be?”
Kara responds by saying she is thinking about taking away the pants in her original design. Christian then says to her that perhaps she shouldn’t completely disregard the pants, but maybe try to incorporate a different pant style.
He then chats with Nora. Instead of making another wedding dress, Nora plans to make a cocktail dress, but with flower petal details that were featured in her previous design. Christian exclaims that the flower details need to be “incredible!”
Next, Christian talks to Korto about her design. She says that she wants to create something that a woman “would wear to a party.” She’s thinking of making a jumpsuit.
After, Christian talks to Rami. Rami says that he wants to create a sexy, backless dress—but in a more eye-catching color. The mannequin currently has neon yellow fabric by the thigh and torso area, and bits of purple on one shoulder.
Rami says that in his previous design, the color was “too subdued,” therefore he wants to change things up.
Christian then walks over to Bishme. Christian inquires with Bishme about his sketch, saying “this is cool…what is that, that’s kind of cool too!” Bishme replies by saying he plans to create a hoodie dress with paired with pants.
Right before leaving the workroom, Christian announces “wow guys, it’s so exciting in here! I can’t wait for my twist! So much fun!”
The Twist is Announced and the Models Arrive for a Fitting — 5:25 p.m. ET
Christian says that for this season, there is no immunity. Therefore, even if a designer wins a challenge, they can possibly be sent home on the next one.
Despite this, there will be prizes and advantages provides to the winner(s) of each challenge. For this challenge, the winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize.
The models walk into the workroom for their fittings.
For designer Prajjé, the model wore a dress in a pink and orange color combination, with a very fitted bottom.
But, there is a wardrobe malfunction. It appears that there isn’t enough fabric on the dress to cover her butt area.
Christian tells Prajjé that it needs to be fixed. Prajjé, in response says, “I’m going to fix it, but I need to see what I need to fix though…sheesh,” in a joking tone.
Wrapping Up the Fitting — 5:30 P.M. ET
The models wrap up their fitting and leave the workroom.
Bishme steps aways from the workroom and walks into the break room, expressing his grief. His redemption design brings back memories of his deceased sister.
The designers then wrap up their work day. They head back to the hotel.
Final Fitting and the Fashion Show Commences — 5:35 p.m. ET
All the models arrive, except for one. Viktor’s model doesn’t show up. The reason isn’t provided.
One of the producers says that the replacement model has very similar proportions to his first model. Viktor states that the model is a little taller compared to his first model.
The models head over to the hair and makeup area. The designers can be seen doing final cutting, sewing and ironing on their garments.
Before the runway show commences, the designers meet the main judges and a guest judge. The guest judge is actor Alicia Silverstone. Cheers to “Clueless” movie fans!
The runway show commences. The first design on the runway was created by Anna.
